FITTING YOUR CAMPER TO YOUR VEHICLE
1. Check Your Bakkie's Load Capacity
Before mounting your camper, it’s critical to understand your vehicle’s weight limits:
-
Payload Capacity – Often listed inside the glove box, or refer to your owner’s manual or manufacturer’s website.
-
GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) – The total weight your bakkie can safely carry, including the truck, passengers, cargo, fuel, and camper.
-
GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – The maximum weight each axle can support.
-
Tyre Load Rating – Found on the tyre sidewall, just behind the inflation pressure info. This is a key safety factor and often the weakest link in your load setup.
2. Clear and Prepare the Bakkie Bed
Remove all bed accessories such as:
-
Covers
-
Canopies
-
Plastic liners
-
Carpet kits
We recommend using a rubber bed mat to:
-
Prevent the camper from sliding
-
Protect your bakkie bed from wear and tear
-
Provide cushioning between the camper and bed
3. Choose the Right Tyres
Ensure your tyres:
-
Are in good condition
-
Have a load rating suitable for the camper
Pro tip: Tyre load capacity is listed on the sidewall. If your tyres aren’t rated for your camper’s weight, upgrade before installation.
4. Prep the Electrical System
Connect your camper to the truck’s electrical system in one of two ways:
-
Via the 7-pin plug at the tow hitch
-
Via a secondary 7-pin connection installed in the bakkie bed (recommended if you're towing)
Both setups require a pigtail extension, available from most auto dealerships.
5. Secure with Tie-Downs
All Southern Cross Campers come standard with a ratchet tie-down system for safe, secure installation. You can attach the ratchet hooks using:
-
Factory tie-down anchors – Confirm their load rating with your dealership or manufacturer.
-
Custom mounting solutions – Ideal for added peace of mind. Contact us or your local fitment center to explore this option.
6. Upgrade Your Suspension (Highly Recommended)
To improve ride quality and stability, we recommend suspension enhancements — especially for mid-sized or 1-ton bakkies. Options include:
-
Airbag suspension systems
-
Helper springs or overload springs
💡 Our top choice: Suspension air bags, designed to improve load handling, reduce sway, and enhance driving comfort.
